The book that started it all! This novel is absolutely essential reading to anyone interested in Wicca or modern paganism. Published in 1949 before the repeal of the Fraudulent Mediums & Witchcraft Act, it contains much of the basis of Wicca in fictional form. The story tells of the quest of Jan Bonder to regain his rightful title in 12th century England. He is aided by his brother Olaf, the Witch Morven and the Healer/Magician Thur. Gardner juxtapositioned the Wiccan material with Solomonic magick throughout the book, demonstrating one of the magickal threads that Wicca came from in the process. The book is an enjoyable tale, that has stood the test of time remarkably well, and should be on your bookshelf!
